Funding one of the world’s premier research institutes

Our oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are home to more than 230,000 known species—many of which we’re still learning about. But perhaps no part of ocean life is more vital and vulnerable than coral reefs.

At The Valentine Foundation, we understand that preserving the future of our planet means protecting its most fragile ecosystems. That’s why we’re proud to partner with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Miami, a global leader in ocean research and coral reef restoration.

Why Coral Reefs Matter

Coral reefs are more than just stunning underwater structures, they are essential to life on Earth:

  • They support 25% of all marine species.

  • They protect coastlines from storms and erosion.

  • They provide food and income to over 500 million people worldwide.

  • They are natural pharmacies, with potential treatments for cancer, arthritis, and bacterial infections.

Yet today, coral reefs are under extreme threat from rising ocean temperatures, pollution, overfishing, and ocean acidification. Scientists estimate that we’ve already lost 50% of coral reefs globally and we could lose up to 90% by 2050 without serious action.

Our Partnership with the Rosenstiel School

To help turn the tide, we’ve teamed up with the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Their groundbreaking work includes:

  • Coral restoration and propagation: Breeding and replanting resilient coral species to revive damaged reefs.

  • Climate research: Studying how warming oceans affect marine ecosystems.

  • Student engagement and training: Equipping the next generation of marine scientists and conservationists.

Through this partnership, The Valentine Foundation is helping fund educational opportunities, research internships, and hands-on conservation training that empowers young people to protect our oceans.

How You Can Help Protect Ocean Life

You don’t need to be a marine biologist to make a difference. Here are a few ways you can help:

  • Reduce plastic use: Single-use plastics often end up in the ocean, harming marine life.

  • Choose sustainable seafood: Look for responsibly-sourced options to help reduce overfishing.

  • Support reef-friendly products: Especially sunscreens that don’t contain reef-harming chemicals like oxybenzone.

  • Volunteer or donate: Organizations working on ocean and reef conservation always need support.

  • Spread awareness: Talk about ocean conservation with friends and family. Small conversations can spark big change.

The Future Is Blue

Preserving coral reefs is not only about saving colorful fish or scenic dive spots, it’s about defending the foundations of ocean life and ensuring a healthy planet for future generations.

At The Valentine Foundation, we’re honored to play a role in this critical work, and we’re excited to continue supporting young scientists, marine researchers, and conservation leaders through our partnership with the Rosenstiel School.

Together, we can help our oceans thrive.
